Bob Dylan’s Nobel: Reactions — not all of them positive

Here’s how the world has reacted to the awarding of the Nobel Prize in literature to American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan. British Indian novelist Salman Rushdie, often mentioned as a possible Nobel literature prize contender, has lauded the choice to honour Dylan with this year’s award. “From Orpheus to Faiz, song poetry have been closely linked. Dylan is the brilliant inheritor of the bardic tradition. Great choice,” Rushdie tweeted. Scottish novelist Irvine Welsh reacted angrily to the awarding of the Nobel Prize for literature to Bob Dylan, embarking on a series of exchanges on Twitter. “I’m a Dylan fan, but this is an ill conceived nostalgia award wrenched from the rancid prostates of senile, gibbering hippies,” the Trainspotting author wrote. Dylan, Clapton manuscripts to go on auction Original manuscripts of classic songs by Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton will go on auction as part of a collection of rock memorabilia, Sotheby's said Monday. The auction house estimated that the two manuscripts would fetch $50,000 to $70,000 each when they go on sale Saturday in New York. The collection includes the manuscript of "Layla," one of rock's best-known songs of unrequited love, which Clapton wrote in 1970 about Pattie Harrison — then the wife of his friend, Beatle George Harrison. She would later marry Clapton before they eventually divorced after nine years. Clapton wrote the opening lyrics to "Layla," which was loosely inspired by the tale of the Persian Romantic poet Nizami Ganjavi, on the stationary of the Thunderbird Motel in Miami Beach...

Africa’s move on palm oil to hurt local industries By GERALD ANDAE Kenya manufacturers who rely on palm oil will be adversely affected following the decision by African states to cut the crop’s production by 70 per cent in a bid to curb its devastating effects on the environment. The agreement was reached in Marrakech, Morocco, last week during the 22nd conference of parties (COP22). The product is used in manufacturing a number of consumer goods including cosmetics, soaps, and cooking oil among others. The country imports crude palm oil since it is not locally available. A project initiated by government in western Kenya some years ago failed. The General Manager of the Golden Africa Kenya Ltd Abdulghani Waghohi said they will have to diversify into other products in the event that supply of the crude ...

Being gracious in loss, like Hillary On Wednesday morning, many of us woke up to the news that Donald Trump was headed for sure victory and the White House. When it was finally announced, the shock intensified a flurry of internet activity, crashing money markets and riots across the US. I had followed this US election just as close as the one with Barack Obama because of the powerful message a Hillary win portended. Particularly for women and girls. Sadly, it was not to be. The shocking result had even the political journalists on CNN admitting the media had got it wrong as had the pollsters. Since then, many have scratched their heads trying to understand just what happened. There will be more head scratching for years. On that Wednesday, it was all...
