Cleveland Indians RHP Corey Kluber gets ALCS opener

CLEVELAND – Corey Kluber is the first of many Cleveland Indians pitchers taking the mound in the American League Championship Series. Kluber will start Game 1 of the ALCS on Friday night against the Toronto Blue Jays and be the frontman of a broken-in pitching staff that manager Terry Francona credits as the backbone of the ALDS sweep of the Boston Red Sox. Kluber was 18-9 this season. He also started Game 2 of the ALDS against David Price and pitched seven shutout innings after being slowed late in the season by a quadriceps injury. But Toronto scored 22 runs with eight home runs against the Rangers. “They’re excellent,” Indians pitching coach Mickey Callaway said. “Their whole roster is pretty good swinging the bat. We’ve got to make pitches from…

DeSean Jackson's health progressing following Thursday's practice The Washington Redskins aren’t going to jump to conclusions on DeSean Jackson’s status, but there is a sense of optimism that they’ll their wide receiver will be able to play on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers. He was limited for the second straight practice on Thursday, but both Redskins Coach Jay Gruden and offensive coordinator Sean McVay thought he looked good. “He did the majority – he did some of the team reps,” Gruden said. “He was running. We didn’t do any contact, obviously. We don’t really do that on Thursday, so we’ve just got to see how he’s doing tonight and Friday.” Jackson wouldn’t say whether he will play, but he said he feels good despite the slight pain he feels in his ...

‘We like our guy’: Toronto Maple Leafs made right call in picking Mitch Marner over ... From slimy reptiles to wicked curveballs, Mitch Marner, Noah Hanifin and the rest of the top-ranked NHL prospects of 2015 were kept busy in the days leading up to the draft in Sunrise, Fla. On one particular muggy south Florida morning, Marner and Hanifin joined Connor McDavid, Jack Eichel and Dylan Strome for a tour of the Everglades. At one point, handlers took turns putting a wriggly green snake around the necks of Marner and Hanifin, a squirming living necklace as it were. “(Marner) was scared of it,” chuckled Hanifin, who showed no such fear. Advantage: Hanifin. At another Miami-area outing, the top prospects had the opportunity to go to Marlins Park and take batting practice at the spiffy home of the local MLB team...
