Spend money effectively

Do you know how to spend money? We have talked about expenses in this column several times. Many times it has been about managing expenses, being efficient on costs and even preparing to cut back when we have to. It is time to look at the other side: How to spend well; to spend money in a way that works for us. The only way to manage expenses properly is by spending money well. Here are three things you can do to help you do that:  1. Have a spending plan. This doesn’t have to be a huge spreadsheet that you overanalyse nor does it have to be about setting restrictions. It is more about being intentional about the way you spend money every day. This could mean…

She stands Yuna-ted: Shaken, but not stirred by the US Presidential election result, ... KUALA LUMPUR: When Americans and people the world over were glued to their TV sets, computers and phones on the day of the Presidential elections in the US on Nov 8, our darling singer-songwriter, Yunalis Zara’ai (Yuna), was doing the same, state-side. As she watched, and making music in the studio, she posted on her Twitter account: “In the studio with @ZHUmusic, making amazing music while following US election updates and having mini heart attacks.” It is understandable why she would be “having mini heart attacks”, as she was watching how the (then) candidate Donald Trump was leading against his opponent, Hillary Clinton. Almost a year ago, following the massacre in San Bernardino, California, Trump had issued perhaps his most dramatic proposal: "A total and ...

A user’s guide to buying seafood Seafood is one of the least-consumed protein sources in the United States, which is odd because it’s readily available, quick to cook and very nutritious. So, I wondered, what’s getting in the way of us enjoying seafood more often? Quite simply, people are confused about what to buy. Environmental sustainability, mercury, PCBs, Omega-3, farmed vs. wild — these are the seafood buzzwords. They add to consumer confusion at the grocery store, and many people just give up and buy chicken instead. Yes, it’s confusing. But because seafood is so nutritious, I wanted to learn how to make the best choice. Here’s where my journey took me and what I will be buying for dinner tonight. Sustainability Seafood is a term that encompasses fish and shellfish —...

When we look back: The male/female regret divide The other day Dawn French said, in passing, that she regretted not having taken drugs when she was younger. No one was remotely shocked. This is what fiftysomethings do: keep a running checklist of things they should have done when they had the chance, which they can no longer do (or not without consequences). Nine times out of 10, the reason you didn't get round to doing these things at the time is because that wasn't who you were, it would have scared you witless and you never had the opportunity. But the temptation is to see our lives in terms of missed potential, rather than just the way things were. My suspicion is that most of us are in the same boat when it comes to regrets...

Rahman’s Vande Mataram Live-in-VR Experience premieres at NFDC Film Bazaar on the third day of the film extravaganza and, according to him, the new technology will help in musical experiments. “Being a professional musician, after a certain point I tend to get bored unless there is a new challenge and room for experiment. Soon smartphones may monitor health, food quality Hyperspectral cameras, which are traditionally expensive, have been used for demanding medical and industrial, space and environmental sensing.(Representative Image) Scientists have created the world’s first hyperspectral mobile device by converting a smartphone camera into an optical sensor which can sense food quality or monitor health. Hyperspectral cameras, which are traditionally expensive, have been used for demanding medical and industrial, space and environmental sensing. The cost-effective optical Micro Opto Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) spectral technology enables the development of new mobile applications for environmental sensing and observation from vehicles and drones, said researchers from VTT Technical Research Centre in Finland. Other applications include health monitoring and food analysis. All of this forms part of an environment combining smart sensors with the Internet. “Consumer benefits could appear...

Kaya Henderson used to run D.C. public schools. Now she's a fashion model. Out of all the glossy photographs from a fashion shoot for the plus-size retailer Eloquii, the one that stands out shows a model in a black bejeweled cocktail dress with sheer sleeves and strappy silver sandals. Her head is thrown back in laughter; her lips are painted cherry red. Her hair is a cloud of curls. The model is Kaya Henderson. Yes, that Kaya Henderson. The former chancellor of D.C. Public Schools. The education administrator who was typically seen wearing low-key business attire — restrained, neat. Henderson stepped down in September and hasn’t been working since then but, rather, reclaiming her life and “enjoying not being responsible for a school district,” she said. She’s also looking quite glamorous. Henderson stars in an Eloquii ...
