Long-Forgotten Research Unearths New Mystery about Lyme Disease

The tick hunter was hopeful he had found the cause of the disabling illness, recently named Lyme disease, that was spreading anxiety through leafy communities east of New York City. At a government lab in Montana, Willy Burgdorfer typed a letter to a colleague, reporting that blood from Lyme patients showed “very strong reactions” on a test for an obscure, tick-borne bacterium. He called it the “Swiss Agent.” But further studies raised doubts about whether he had the right culprit, and 18 months later, in 1981, Burgdorfer instead pinned Lyme on another microbe. The Swiss Agent test results were forgotten. Now STAT has obtained those documents, including some discovered in boxes of Burgdorfer’s personal papers found in his garage after his death in 2014. Gut Bacteria May Lead to Parkinson’s Disease: Study Parkinson’s disease may be linked to certain gut bacteria, according to a new study. Writing in the journal Cell, researchers at the California Institute of Technology say: “Changes in the composition of gut bacterial populations—or possibly gut bacteria themselves—are actively contributing to and may even cause the deterioration of motor skills that is the hallmark of this disease.” Parkinson’s is a neurodegenerative disease that affects some 10 million people around the world and one million Americans. Symptoms include tremors and difficulty walking. It has no known cure. Researchers say 75 percent of Parkinson’s sufferers have gastrointestinal (GI) “abnormalities,” usually constipation. The new findings about the connection of gut bacteria to the disease could lead to new treatments that could, for example, help good bacteria develop or kill ...

Canberra Raiders prop Shannon Boyd 'unlucky' to miss out on Kangaroos spot Canberra Raiders prop Shannon Boyd is "very unlucky" not to have made Australia coach Mal Meninga's XVII to play England, according to Raiders coach Ricky Stuart, because he's been the "form prop of the tour". My daughter helped me realise it is OK to talk about miscarriages I was walking through the baby food aisle at the supermarket when I felt it. I was convinced it was happening - that I was miscarrying. We'd recently started trying for our second child, and somewhere between the gummy smiles of the babies on the Pampers packs and the Tommee Tippy sippy cups, I lost any sense of reality and left a laden shopping basket to run to the toilets. There was no blood - I wasn't even pregnant - but I found myself uncontrollably sobbing about the three pregnancies I had lost before. One in four pregnancies is believed to end in a miscarriage - loss of a pregnancy during the first 23 weeks - yet so little is said about this lurking elephant in the room. An international hacking gang that has previously claimed hoax bomb threats at Australian schools says the calls are made "just for the mayhem".
