European car makers to upsize engines to meet real-world emissions tests – report

Thanks to new real-world emission tests that will soon come into force, a number of European car makers are said to be rapidly revising their engine plans. Sources have told Reuters that Renault, Volkswagen and General Motors will begin phasing out their smallest engines, and replacing them with new larger models over the coming years. For much of the past decade, European car makers have been rolling out smaller engines, often with fewer cylinders, to meet tightening emissions regulations. These engines are fitted with turbochargers to boost power to levels at or beyond the engines they replace. In the wake of the Volkswagen’s Dieselgate affair, the EU will begin subjecting new vehicles to more realistic real-world NOx (oxides of nitrogen) tests from next year. All…

My Canadian Track Day Adventure – Stage 2 This post comes from Autoblog Open Road, our contributor network. The author is solely responsible for the content, and any opinions do not necessarily reflect those of Autoblog and its editors. May 27-28, 2016We arrived late Friday afternoon the day before and completed our enrollment for the event. I spent about an hour or so placing our number and various sponsor decals at various locations around the car. If you squinted, the near-stock Mustang almost looked like a race car.As the website says, "This world class facility is home to the longest track in Canada, at 5.05 km in length, consisting of 20 turns, measuring 40 feet wide, and featuring a 2,000 ft long straightaway".Since this was my first visit to Calabogie, I was encouraged to take a couple ...

Jaguar's midsize XE sedan helps the automaker in several ways Let’s go back to October, 2014 shall we? Specifically to the Paris Motor Show, site of the usual gaggle of impressive concepts such as the Lamborghini Asterion, Volkswagen XL Sport and Infiniti Q80 Inspiration. It was a production car, however, stealing more than its fair share of limelight: Jaguar’s new midsize sedan, the XE. We named it the show’s Most Significant sedan for several reasons.First, the XE was the first Jaguar in seemingly forever set to take on the German juggernauts – BMW 3-Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Audi A4 – as Jaguar realized it couldn’t survive on full-size luxury sedan and sports coupe sales alone. Two, thanks in part to its reasonable starting price (around $35K), it was slated as Jaguar’s future best...

Here’s the second trailer for ‘The Grand Tour’ The question every die-hard Top Gear fan is wondering: can Amazon with Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May recreate the magic of the old show on The Grand Tour. The first trailer showed plenty of promise and now a new trailer is finally out, and judging from the few tidbits we’re treated with the answer is a resounding yes. Like before, there are plenty of exotic cars and equally exotic locations. Given the last factor, we wouldn’t be surprised if The Grand Tour ends up appealing to fans of traveling shows, too. But what about the cars? We know the three larrikins will be spending time with the hypercar holy trinity of the Ferrari NYSE:RACE LaFerrari, McLaren P1 and Porsche 918 ...

Mazda working on ‘fundamental and structure issues of rotary engine’, no electrified ... Mazda has confirmed that work is continuing on the resurrection of a rotary-powered sports car, which will not be hybridised, however the fundamental issues of that type of engine remain a challenge. Having introduced the Mazda RX Vision at the Tokyo motor show last year, the company has made it one of its internal missions to bring back a rotary sports car of some sort. Speaking to Australian media at today’s Los Angeles auto show, the company’s head of research and development, Kiyoshi Fujiwara, said that a rotary sports car will come back, but the timeline is undetermined for now. “RX vision is our vision model for our company and our engineers and designers, therefore for the future – I cannot say when – but in...

Buick Velite Concept With the possible exception of the Riviera Concept from 2013, Buick has never been the type to go over-the-top with its concept cars. Knowing that, it comes as no surprise that Buick’s latest concept, the Velite Plug-In Hybrid, made its debut at the 2016 Auto Guangzhou show to minimal buzz and fanfare. Not that it deserved the hype because the Velite Plug-In Hybrid Concept doesn’t even strike us as a buzz-worthy prototype, at least in the traditional sense of how these concepts are generally received by the auto industry. There are no ridiculous physical attributes, no obnoxious features. It doesn’t even have a headline-worthy engine. What it does have is a crossover profile, which tells you what Buick’s plans for the concept are ...
