Over $350-million spent to clean up abandoned mine in Yukon and not an inch has been ... WHITEHORSE — More than $350 million of taxpayer dollars in the past two decades — over a quarter billion dollars in the past decade alone — has been spent to clean up the abandoned Faro mine site, a moonscape of waste rock and mustard yellow ponds in the mountains of south-central Yukon. But, according to the Treasury Board of Canada’s annual reports posted online, nothing has been remediated: Zero. Zip. Nadda. “Actual cubic metres remediated: zero; actual hectares remediated: zero; actual tonnes remediated: zero.” Off limits and out of sight — overlooking the Pelly River Valley on the territory of the Ross River Dena First Nations — the 2,500-hectare Faro mine property is one of Canada’s largest contaminated sites. And one of its costliest secrets...

Linturi urges opposition leaders to embrace dialogue, says demos will bring chaos Igembe South MP Mithika Linturi has criticised opposition leaders for calling for mass protests over the amendment of election laws and asked the church to pray for them. Mr Linturi said there is a lot of tension after the National Assembly made changes to the electoral laws. “We have heard various sentiments concerning the changes in the law especially from the opposition and we are calling on the church to intervene and especially pray for the leaders. “We would not wish to see the country being pushed into chaos and therefore we urge those who pray to include the country as one of their prayer items,” he said. He spoke on Friday during a visit to Tuuru Children’s Home in Meru. AVOID CHAOS Kenyans, Mr Linturi...

You'll Never See The Shocking Twist In This Gun Violence PSA Coming As we approach the four-year anniversary of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, a new gun violence PSA is urging viewers to open their eyes to the early warning signs of potentially dangerous behavior. After their 6-year-old sons were killed in the shooting, Newtown parents Nicole Hockley and Mark Barden teamed up with other victims’ loved ones and community members to create Sandy Hook Promise ― a nonprofit that works to protect children from gun violence. Today, the organization released a new PSA in conjunction with their national “Know the Signs” campaign. Titled “Evan,” the video offers a glimpse into the lives of high school students. While a dark ending is somewhat expected, the video’s twist takes a surprising direction. “The PSA...

Donald Trump's inauguration will go on ANALYSIS/OPINION: Media gossips report that Donald Trump is having trouble recruiting Hollywood celebrities to entertain guests at the inauguration. The likes of Elton John, KISS, Aretha Franklin, Celine Dion, Garth Brooks and Justin Timberlake have been more or less reliably reported to be still nursing snits and pouts, unable to come to terms with the election results, and will be missing in Washington on Jan. 20. The scarcity of twinkle and tinsel, such as it may be, may be because so many Hollywood notabilities have, as promised, shuffled off to Buffalo and beyond, some of them to Canada. Or, more likely, they’re hiding out in Southern California, watching videos of themselves with Barack Obama, Hillary, or Bernard Sanders, reflecting on what might have been were life not...

The NHS is planning to use chatbots for non-emergency assistance They’re already being widely used by retailers, but chatbots will soon become tools for the UK’s National Health Service.  According to a report from the Financial Times, from the end of January, the NHS will be trialling a new app created by a startup called Babylon which will ask people questions about their illness symptoms before advising them whether or not they need to contact a health professional. The service is purely for triage rather than any kind of diagnosis service, and it’s intended to replace the 111 non-emergency phone line the NHS currently uses.  Your smartphone will see you now The phone helpline which is staffed by trained operators who aren’t medically qualified is an important service but it’s expensive to run and phonecalls can take ...

The train is coming back – Henry Preliminary preparatory work for resuscitating the railway network is slated to get under way over the Christmas season, following last Friday's signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the Ministry of Transport and Mining - through the Jamaica Railway Corporation - and Herzog Jamaica Limited. "We do actually have a team scheduled for the next week or so which will actually go through every bridge and tunnel throughout the entire rail system. Starting with phase one, which has 21 bridges or tunnels which must be verified as being stable, sound and those sorts of things, we've already committed a sizeable amount of money just to employ an independent firm, and they should be on the ground by next week or the following week. "We don't have the luxury of ...
